PolliConnect Partner Meeting in Belgium Ballyhoura Development is proud to be a partner in PolliConnect, a major European initiative co-funded by the Interreg North-West Europe Programme. PolliConnect brings together 13 partners from five countries—Ireland, Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands—with a shared goal of tackling the alarming decline in wild pollinator populations. The project aims to increase pollinator biodiversity indicators by 20% in pilot zones through improved management of grasslands, wetlands, and flower strips, while actively engaging farmers and local communities in pollinator-friendly practices. On October 8–9, Ballyhoura Development took part in a partner meeting in Ghent, hosted by the Flemish Land Agency. This two-day gathering provided an opportunity for partners to review project progress, share insights, and plan collaborative activities for 2026. © Laurian Parmentier from the University of Ghent Participants also visited Living Lab sites in Oudenaarde, where they observed innovative approaches to mowing and habitat management designed to enhance on-farm biodiversity. These techniques are helping support a diverse range of pollinators—including wild bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. The visit further showcased the use of technology and artificial intelligence in identifying and monitoring pollinator species, offering new possibilities for ecological research and conservation. © Laurian Parmentier from the University of Ghent The insights and learning from this trip will inform and strengthen future PolliConnect activities within the Ballyhoura Development Catchment area, supporting local efforts to protect and restore pollinator populations.
