Would your community like to play its part in nurturing spaces for pollinators?

If the answer is yes, then read on to learn more about the role you can play!

About the Polliconnect Project

Polliconnect is an EU-funded partnership project which aims to support declining pollinator populations by creating biodiverse grassland habitats.

Ballyhoura Development is the Irish partner in the project and is now seeking support from local communities to identify green spaces for experimental sites.

These sites will utilise innovative mowing techniques to boost wildflower growth and pollinator activity, with support, guidance, and expertise provided by Ballyhoura Development.

Why This Matters

Pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hoverflies play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and food production. Yet, their numbers are declining due to habitat loss and environmental pressures.

The Polliconnect Project seeks to reverse this trend by:

  • Creating and managing grassland habitats using novel techniques

  • Increasing wildflower diversity and pollinator abundance

  • Engaging local communities in hands-on conservation and citizen science

What Kind of Sites Are We Looking For?

We’re seeking grassland areas approximately 50 x 20 metres in size that could be used as experimental study sites.

These sites will be maintained by Ballyhoura Development staff, in collaboration with local communities, using innovative mowing techniques designed to enhance biodiversity over time.

Ideal locations might include:

  • Unused green spaces

  • Margins of sports fields or community parks

  • School grounds or institutional land

  • Private land with community access

Get Involved!

If you know of a site that fits the bill - or if your group manages such a space - we’d love to hear from you!
