Ballyhoura Development recently participated in the kick-off meeting of the EU-funded PolliConnect project, held in Calais, France.

The meeting brought together partners from across North-West Europe to plan and collaborate on innovative strategies to support pollinators and restore biodiversity.

At the heart of the discussions were new grassland management approaches aimed at boosting pollinator populations in pilot areas, and the key role that citizen science will play in monitoring these important changes.

What is PolliConnect?

PolliConnect is a transnational project focused on reconnecting fragmented ecosystems and promoting biodiversity recovery through local, practical actions that have wider European impact.

The project has set ambitious goals, including a 20% increase in pollinator biodiversity indicators in selected pilot areas.

Key features of PolliConnect include:

  • Living Labs: Establishing and testing 8 Living Labs across 6 countries to develop effective, site-specific solutions.

  • Innovative Technology: Using AI-powered wild bee cameras to monitor biodiversity and support ecosystem health.

  • Community Involvement: Engaging citizens, gardeners, and farmers through practical training and awareness campaigns.

  • Policy Support: Generating replicable data and best practices to influence future biodiversity policies.

Ballyhoura Development’s Role

Ballyhoura Development will focus on enhancing knowledge exchange and fostering collaboration among all partners.
Over the coming months, we’ll be rolling out a number of key initiatives, including:
  • Demonstration Sites: Showcasing best practice in grassland and biodiversity management.

  • Communication Toolkit: Creating accessible resources for stakeholders and community groups.

  • International Events: Sharing lessons and successes through international events.

  • Training and Awareness: Delivering practical training and campaigns to promote pollinator-friendly practices across Europe.

Whether you're a farmer, a community gardener, a local policymaker, or just someone who cares about the future of our landscapes, PolliConnect will provide tools, knowledge and inspiration to take meaningful action.
