During 2025, Ballyhoura Development CLG continued to deliver the WorkAbility Programme, supporting people with disabilities and employers across the region to engage in inclusive education, training, and employment opportunities.

Throughout the year, Workability supported employers through practical guidance, expert advice on employment supports, and partnerships with local businesses offering meaningful work experience placements. The programme works with employers who are employing, or considering employing, a person with a disability, providing tailored support to help build confident and inclusive workplaces.

A key highlight of 2025 was the delivery of free Disability Equality and Inclusion Training, in partnership with the Disability Federation of Ireland. Training sessions took place in Kilmallock and Mitchelstown, welcoming local employers and community organisations. These sessions focused on raising awareness, promoting equality, and providing practical tools to help embed inclusion into everyday workplace practices.

Employers also benefited from expert input from an Employer Relations Officer from the Department of Social Protection, who shared valuable information on the Work and Access Programme. This guidance helped employers better understand the financial and practical supports available to them when recruiting and supporting employees with disabilities.

Another significant success in 2025 was the continued growth of the Workability Work Experience Programme. Local shops, garden centres, and food and hospitality businesses partnered with Workability to offer placements that help participants build confidence, develop skills, and explore pathways towards meaningful employment.

One such partnership was with Ahern Nurseries and Plant Centre, where Garrett completed a work experience placement.

“When Garrett first joined us for work experience, he was incredibly shy and reserved, but it quickly became clear that he had potential — he just needed the right environment to feel safe and supported,” said Orla Ahern. “Over time, we watched him gain confidence, build skills, and show his true personality. It has been great having Garrett with us, and we are delighted to play a small role in his journey.”

Garrett also shared his own experience of the placement: “I loved the planting and potting. I loved meeting all the staff and Orla. I made great friends with Poppy the dog.”

Workability also supported businesses beyond employment, including accessibility and inclusive design. Ciara O'Brien from Barnahown spoke about the value of engaging directly with lived experience through the programme.

“Through the Workability Scheme, I was put in touch with someone with real-life experience of accessible travel, which was invaluable during the design of our new extension. I now feel confident that our accessible design is thoughtfully considered, and I anticipate being able to welcome a much wider range of guests.”

By working closely with employers, participants, and community partners, the Workability Programme continues to demonstrate that inclusive employment is both achievable and beneficial for businesses and communities alike.
