On May 26th, 2025, the Friar’s Gate Theatre in Kilmallock came alive with colour, music, and powerful storytelling as East Limerick hosted its Traveller Pride celebration.

The event formed part of the national Traveller Pride Week 2025, a two-week celebration of Traveller culture, identity, and community taking place across Ireland.

A Showcase of Local Voices

The evening featured two inspiring creative projects led by members of the local Traveller community:

  • “Inner Dialogue” – Building Bridges Traveller Youth Project
This animated short, created by young Travellers, explored themes of identity and resilience. The screening was followed by a live performance from the youth involved, whose energy and creativity captivated the audience.
  • “Life off the Blue Tar Road” – Film Premiere
This documentary, directed by Grey Heron Media and funded by Coimisiún na Meán, offered an intimate look into the lives of Travellers in East Limerick. Through personal stories and community insights, the film highlighted the strength and aspirations of a community shaping its own future.

Adding to the evening’s warmth, children from the local community took to the stage to sing, creating a joyful and inclusive atmosphere that resonated with everyone present.

A Community United

The event brought together a wide range of attendees, including Traveller families, local residents, and representatives from various organisations and agencies:

  • An Garda Síochána
  • GOSHH
  • University of Limerick
  • Foróige
  • HSE
  • LCETB
  • West Limerick Primary Healthcare Project
  • Limerick City and County Council
  • TASC
  • Local Creative Youth Partnership
  • Scoil Mocheallog
  • Creative Ireland

Their presence reflected a shared commitment to inclusion, equality, and cultural recognition.

National Pride, Local Impact

Traveller Pride Week is supported by a coalition of national partners and funders, including the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Pavee Point, Exchange House Ireland, Involve Youth Services, and others. These organisations play a vital role in ensuring Traveller voices are celebrated and supported across the country.

Events like the one in East Limerick took place nationwide, each one a unique expression of Traveller identity and pride. From music and art to storytelling and community gatherings, these celebrations highlight the diversity and strength of the Traveller community.

Looking Ahead

As the evening concluded with refreshments and conversation in the theatre foyer, there was a strong sense of connection and optimism. Travellers’ Voice magazine was also in attendance and interviewed several staff members—we look forward to their coverage in an upcoming issue.

The East Limerick Traveller Pride Celebration was more than just an event—it was a celebration of culture, a platform for young voices, and a reminder of the power of community. We are proud to have been part of this special evening and look forward to continuing to support and celebrate the Traveller community throughout the year.
