Tourism in Ballyhoura Country

Tourism has been at the heart of Ballyhoura’s development since the 1980s, when a group of local community members recognised the need to diversify the local economy to address the decline and considered that tourism development offered considerable potential.

Recognising the area’s untapped tourism potential, they formed Ballyhoura Fáilte, a tourism cooperative dedicated to promoting the region and investing in its future.

As the initiative grew, it became clear that to truly support the region’s long-term development, a more integrated approach was needed. This led to the creation of the first Integrated Development Plan and the subsequent establishment of Ballyhoura Development CLG, a community-led local development company committed to rural regeneration.

Over the decades, Ballyhoura has transformed into a destination known for its authenticity, community spirit, and outdoor experiences. The region has embraced a sustainable, regenerative approach to tourism that benefits both locals and visitors — and it now proudly defines itself as:

Ballyhoura Country – Simply Different

This tagline reflects the distinctive blend of people, place and purpose that shapes the visitor experience here. It’s a destination where tourism is rooted in local life, outdoor adventure meets rural charm, and every encounter feels personal.

Today, tourism in Ballyhoura continues to grow through strategic investment in trails, accommodation, food, culture and experience development — all supported by regional and national partners, as well as local communities.
