The East Limerick Primary Healthcare Project launched in 2024, and what a fantastic first year it has been!

In February, our team of 9 Community Health Workers and 2 Peer Link Workers began their journey with a mission to improve health and wellbeing within the Traveller Community in East Limerick. In just 10 months, their efforts have made a real difference.

Key Achievements in 2024

Health Initiatives and Community Outreach
Our team organised several impactful activities, including:

  • A Type 2 Diabetes Blood Check Clinic
  • The Traveller Pride Celebration
  • A special mass focused on Traveller Mental Health

In addition to events, the team visited over 90 Traveller households across East Limerick, sharing vital health information on:

  • Heart Health
  • Sepsis Awareness
  • Mental Health
  • Skin Cancer and the dangers of Melanotan use

To provide additional support, they distributed Christmas packs containing crisis and helpline information. The team also conducted chronic disease surveys, gathering valuable insights into the health needs of the community.

Social and Wellness Activities
It wasn’t all hard work though, with plenty of social activities, such as:

  • Gardening and herb planting
  • Mindfulness sessions
  • Beauty & Yoga workshops
It was great to see familiar faces as well as new faces participating in these activities.
We look forward to 2025 as our project and team continue to evolve and strengthen the supports and offerings to the East Limerick Traveller Community.
